What is the New Century Scholarship?

The New Century Scholarship Program (NCSP) was created by the 1999 Utah Legislature to provide scholarship opportunities to Utah students who complete a rigorous academic curriculum during high school. To be eligible, students must be a legal Utah resident and complete the requirements of an associate’s degree or the approved math and science curriculum at a Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) institution with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA by September 1st of the year their class graduates from a Utah high school. It is important for students, parents, and counselors to understand the requirements of the NCSP and for interested students to plan their high school and college curriculum in advance.

Currently, NCSP funding may be used at Dixie State College of Utah, Southern Utah University, University of Utah, Utah State University, Utah Valley University, Weber State University, Brigham Young University, and Westminster College. NCSP awards at the eligible USHE institutions may equal up to 75 percent of an eligible student’s tuition costs for up to 60 credit hours to be used towards the completion of a bachelor’s degree. Eligible students who choose to use their NCSP funding at either Brigham Young University or Westminster College may receive the lower of up to 75 percent of the average tuition costs of the eligible USHE institutions or up to 75 percent of the actual tuition.

NCSP recipients are required to make reasonable progress (successfully enroll in and complete a minimum of six credit hours per semester) toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree to receive funding for the semester. Recipients who fail to earn a semester GPA of 3.0 or above for any two consecutive semesters will lose their eligibility for the NCSP.

Recipients are required to submit a copy of their semester grades and a detailed class schedule each semester to verify their continued eligibility for the NCSP. All eligible NCSP recipients are given five years from the date their high school class graduated to use their NCSP funding.
